AMEC plc is an international engineering and Design/Build company with over 300 offices and 16,000 employees in 40 countries. AMEC manages major industrial and infrastructure projects, such as roads and power networks, bridges, airports, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, and military bases.
AMEC has undertaken an extensive program of work in Iraq and Afghanistan to renovate buildings and to rebuild infrastructure, operations, and security at military bases for the new Iraqi Armed Forces and the Afghan National Army. To date, AMEC has renovated or constructed new administrative offices, barracks, dining facilities, flight line buildings, maintenance shops, guard stations, recreation support areas, warehouses, aircraft hangars and air traffic control towers. AMEC has also rebuilt infrastructure elements including roads, power generation, transmission and distribution systems and water, sewer and stormwater systems.
AMEC program accomplishments to date include:
- Reconstruction of 493 structures with a total of 399,500 square meters
- Restoration/rehabilitation of 55 kilometers of water and sewer lines
- Construction of facilities generating more than 800 Megawatts of power
- Installation of 20 kilometers of new power distribution lines
- Construction of treatment plants producing clean water for 7.2 million Iraqis
- Restoration of sewer lines serving 1.6 million Iraqi citizens
- Establishment of technical learning program providing training to more than 75,000 Iraqi workers
In Afghanistan and Iraq, AMEC’s procurement process emphasizes the use of local subcontractors to capitalize on local knowledge, optimize schedule acceleration, and ensure overall best value to our clients. AMEC has established a network of more than 200 pre-qualified Iraqi and Afghani subcontractors and a workforce of more than 5000 local workers.
This approach promotes economic benefits to the local economy in the short term and enhancement of national economic independence in the long term. Historically, this approach has enabled us to develop skilled trades people and supervisors, a strong safety culture, and the planning and execution skills necessary to facilitate economic stability in country.
AMEC strongly believes in being a good citizen, by developing Afghani and Iraqi companies’ capabilities to work efficiently in their own country. This belief is evidenced in our programs to provide technical assistance to Afghani and Iraqi entities by utilizing Afghani and Iraqi subcontractors, laborers, craftsmen, managers, and as suppliers of goods and materials to the project.
